Our Founder Shane Yerrell, was acknowledged at Essex County Council’s Who Will Care Awards 2018 on May 23.
The Event was held at Anglia Ruskin University, the awards celebrate inspirational individuals, communities, teams and businesses in Essex that make a difference through the work they do.
Mr Yerrell was stabbed in 2007 and suffered emotional trauma in addition to the physical injuries.
Following counselling he made a full recovery and realised he could turn his experience into a positive one by supporting others that had been victims of knife crime.
Staring with a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro that raised £1,400 in 2011 for the Rob Knox Foundation, he has fundraised for causes including the Kiyan Prince Foundation, The Liam Bradshaw Recovery Fund and organised a Fun Day in aid of Lennon’s Fund Campaign.
Lennon Ruffles is a 7 year-old boy who has severe disabilities.
Mr Yerrell said: “It’s overwhelming.
“I do these things for the feeling you get from seeing someone come back from their struggle. Not for the awards.
“But the fact that the who will care awards have chosen me as a winner is crazy. I felt lucky just to be there on the night and definitely didn’t expect to come away with anything other than the lovely experience of being there.”
Last year, Shane was awarded a British Citizen Award and has just returned from a fundraising trek along the Great Wall of China with the proceeds going to the family trust of James Bulger.
To date Mr Yerrell has raised a total of over £30,000.
